Dave from Driftwood surfboards approached us here at Seabase to finish his hand crafted wooden surfboards (real surfboards I add which are meant to be surfed). This is our first order of boards that were finished last week and they are real gems.
Now residing in Cornwall the 28 year old Scotsman is now set on a new path to produce sustainable hollow wooden surfboards and offer people the chance to be involved in the shaping process of their very own customised board. After recognising his talents we wanted to get the lowdown on his future plans and the reasons behind his new project.
"The main aim of mine is to set up a workshop to help people build their own board and appreciate the feeling of surfing a craft they have built themself and enjoy the journey of the build."
The next project we are working on is a range of 'Quiver' Surfboards with custom shapes. Keep your eye out for these which will be ready beginning of August.
Here is the making of the Wave Bandit by Dane Reynolds. Choosing the best choice of blank for the job, US blanks which we at Seabase have supported and raved about for years, Dane shapes and crafts his new board from start to finish. Describing the board as a "pretty crude piece of equipment", Dane shows his true skills at the end of the video portraying what it is like to have fun surfing!
We have a full container of US Blanks arriving Tuesday 07/07/11 so give us a shout before they are all sold so you can make your next 'Wave Bandit'.
Being a keen surfer and always up for a challenge, I decided after a great deal of research, to attempt to build my own wooden hollow surfboard.
I contacted Paul Jensen, who lives in the USA, for advice and I purchased a set of plans along with a CD to help me with my project. For anyone that maybe thinking of attempting to build a board, they should refer to the CD as
in my opinion, it is the equivalent to the bible for builders of hollow wooden surfboards.
My pictures show a 6ft Fish, which is based upon the Steve Liss design from the early 1970’s. The original board was designed to be 5ft 6”, other than that, it is virtually the same.
The board is similar to the construction of a model aeroplane i.e. it has a central stringer and ribs that run 90 degrees to the stringer. The top and bottom decks are made from 3mm Italian poplar plywood. The rails are constructed from cork and bendy plywood and the fins are also made from plywood.
The top and bottom decks are formed from 6oz fibreglass matting and topped with a 6oz deck patch. It is important to use epoxy resin; do not use polyester resin as this reacts with certain oils that are present in certain woods. The
finished weight of the board is 6.74 kilos.
This is the fourth board that I have made, the others being a 9ft long board, 11ft long board and a 7ft 6” retro type board based upon an old Inner Vision surfboard from circa 1976, which I still own.
I would like to thank Panni from the company Seabase, which is based in Newquay, Cornwall. He gave me sound advice on the type of materials and quantities required to fibreglass the boards and they also supplied me with
the materials. I also received help and advice from Mark and Steve at Fluid Concept, Scarborough.
I recommend that anyone that may be thinking of attempting the same type of project as I have done, should refer to Paul Jensen’s website.
If anyone is in my area, i.e. Loughborough, Leicestershire, they are more than welcome to contact me for advice and have a look at the boards or email me: michael.lee60@ntlworld.com.

Here's a nice shot taken of Quiver rider Antoine Delpero taking on the surf in Hawaii on his Quiver Delpero Pro model. Looks like size is no issue for the world no 1 champion longboarder.

Our Quiver team rider Adam has just finished fourth in Europe on the European Longboard Tour 2010 which is a fantastic result for him in his first year on tour.
Adam is the highest ranked surfer from England on the tour finishing above the likes of other British surfers such as Ben Skinner & James Parry.
The European Longboard Tour with only two contests left on the circuit and Adam sitting in fifth place on the tour. The first contest was in northern Morocco & the second being in Lisbon, Portugal.
"I decided it was going too be better to drive. We had a week before the contest to surf and drive to Morocco. With the help of Brittany Ferries we caught the Plymouth to Santander, ferry which cut out the hole of France. We left on a Thursday and About 5 days later we turned up in Morocco After driving 1500 miles and stopping for a few surfs on the way down. Just a day or two before the contest. The contest started on the weekend and the waves were small but fun. I made the semi Finals finishing joint 7th. In a very hard semi final against Remi Aruzo, Ben Skinner & Ed Delpero. With A few extra points towards my overall finishing position and a bit off prize money. We packed our bags and headed to Portugal for the final contest of the tour."
